Public lecture: Exploring Living Spaces for the Future Generations: Sustainable, Smart, and Humane
Housing is a fundamental need but how can we live sustainably?

This lecture aims to explore urban living spaces where housing is not only an essential need but also the foundation of quality of life.
As urbanization accelerates, over 40% of Vietnam’s population now lives in urban areas (OECD Economic Surveys: Viet Nam, 2025). This rapid urban expansion comes with challenges: living spaces are shrinking, and housing costs are increasing by 15–20% annually due to inflation and the rising prices of construction materials (PwC Emerging Trends in Real Estate Asia Pacific, 2025). In response, the Prime Minister of Vietnam has called for an increase in housing supply to cool down property prices and prevent market bubbles (Reuters, 2025).
However, in the race to meet economic and urbanization pressures, modern living spaces are often over-optimized for cost efficiency. Many residential areas are turning into “machines for living” meeting only basic needs while neglecting human connection, community, and the natural environment.
This talk invites participants to rethink urban living spaces, not merely as places to reside, but as foundations for well-being and quality of life. Each home can be reimagined as a “living ecosystem” that fosters social connection, enhances mental health, and contributes to sustainable urban development.
Speakers from the Institute of Smart City and Management (ISCM), School of Technology and Design, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), will share multidimensional perspectives and real-world examples of sustainable, human-centered, and community-oriented housing design. The discussion will explore successful housing models from Northern and Southern Europe, South Korea, and other regions where living spaces are crafted as integral parts of a sustainable urban ecosystem.
