Workshop “Materials Matter: Designing for a Sustainable Future”
As climate change becomes increasingly urgent, the architecture and construction sectors are facing a critical need for transformation. Building materials—once regarded as purely technical components—have now emerged as key determinants of a building’s sustainability and its environmental impact.
From resource extraction and manufacturing to transportation, usage, and recycling, every material choice leaves a significant footprint on the ecosystem. This raises an important question: How can architects and designers make material decisions that are not only technically effective, but also environmentally and socially responsible?
🌿 The workshop “Materials Matter: Designing for a Sustainable Future” is designed to address this very question through an interactive and practice-oriented learning experience. Going beyond foundational knowledge, the workshop creates a platform for exchange, where participants can engage with global perspectives on sustainable architecture while connecting them to the local context in Vietnam.

Through a series of dynamic activities—including discussions, case analyses, and design challenges—participants will have the opportunity to:
✨ Gain a solid understanding of the core principles of sustainable architecture and the role of materials within the built environment
✨ Explore passive design strategies to optimize microclimate conditions and reduce energy consumption
✨ Understand criteria for selecting sustainable materials, from environmental friendliness to reusability and long-term performance
✨ Analyze and enhance awareness of building energy performance throughout its lifecycle
More than just theoretical learning, the workshop offers a hands-on experience where participants actively engage in the full process—from research and ideation to testing and refining design solutions. It is an opportunity to strengthen critical thinking, teamwork skills, and to approach sustainable design from fresh and innovative perspectives.
🎓 The workshop will be led by Associate Professor Luciano Cardellichio, a lecturer with extensive experience in architecture and sustainable development, bringing a combination of academic depth and international practical insights.
